MARINA WEST YACHT CLUB

The Marina West Yacht Club (MWYC) was formed by a group of boaters who, for the most part, docked their boats at Village West Marina. Their primary interest was to enjoy boating, as a group, to all points of the California Delta. They held meetings at various locations until they decided to join with the tennis enthusiasts at the tennis facility adjacent to the Village West Marina and formed the Marina West Yacht and Tennis Club.

The leaders of the group became familiar with the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA), an association of yacht clubs and recreational boating groups throughout Northern California. To be a PICYA member required that a club had to be dedicated totally to the betterment and promotion of yachting. The Marina West Yacht and Tennis Club’s affiliation with tennis did not allow the Club to meet the requirements for PICYA membership. In 1978 it was decided by the members that they should shed the tennis affiliation and become the Marina West Yacht Club, dedicated to the promotion of safe boating and fostering an interest in all aspects of boating. The Club became incorporated as a non-profit corporation and became a member of PICYA in 1979. In 1988, the Club relocated to a double-wide mobile home at Stephens Anchorage on the Deep Water Channel in Stockton, California, now known as River Point Landing. The current Clubhouse, barbecue house, and docking facilities were developed by the membership, mostly using "Sweat Equity", from those meager beginnings!

MWYC hosts other yacht clubs for monthly cruise-in functions, and cruises monthly to yacht clubs throughout the Delta and San Francisco Bay Area. The Club provides docking for the cruise-in boats, cocktail parties, dinners, dances, and barbecues. General Membership Meetings are held at the Club ten months each year, generally on the 2nd Friday of each month, which includes dinner and the exchange of important boating information. Cruise-ins to the Club are held throughout the year for the members which focus on boating safety education, safety inspections, socializing, general club facility maintenance, and special celebrations. Each year, generally in September, a ten day Bay Cruise is sponsored by the Club. Blue Water Cruises are held in conjunction with the Bay Cruise in some years. These cruises, particularly, provide the cruisers with first hand experience to sharpen navigation, boat handling, docking, and related skills with help from the most experienced cruisers.

Boat ownership is not a requirement for MWYC Membership, but, an interest in boating and water related recreation is! Membership is open to any adult male or female of reputable character. The primary categories of membership are Single Membership and Family Membership, each category with a single vote on business matters. There are generally 100 votes amongst the membership, which includes upwards of 190 individuals because a majority of the memberships are in the Family category. Annual dues are $500 for each membership vote and Initiation Fees may be established by the Board of Directors on an annual basis. The Club is governed by the membership through a nine member Board of Directors. The Board consists of the Flag Officers which include the Commodore (the Club’s Chief Executive Officer), the Vice Commodore, and Rear Commodore, and the Junior Staff Commodore, Port Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Directors.

Carrying on Naval and other traditions and protocols of "The Sea" are an important part of the official conduct of the Club’s operation. Just as important are the socializing and development of lifetime friendships with those that share similar boating interests. Please come by and visit, and see how membership in a yacht club can enhance your recreational advocation!
