Marina West Yacht
Club
Contributions to the
community
The Marina West Yacht Club (MWYC) is a
California non-profit corporation formed in 1979 to foster an interest in
all aspects of boating, to promote boating safety and education, and assist
its members in contributing to their enjoyment of water related recreation.
Its regular Safety Days, boating safety seminars, and cruises to all areas
of the Delta and San Francisco Bay afford the opportunity to have first hand
experiences that result in a safer use of the waterways for all.
MWYC created and initiated the "Delta Reflections" Lighted
Boat Parade in 1979 for the benefit of the Geater Stockton Community to
launch the Christmas Holiday Season on the first Saturday of December. This
spectacular parade of more than sixty boats of all sizes, decorated with
thousands of lights, is considered the "Grand Daddy" of all lighted boat
parades and has been presented by MWYC each of the past 27 years. It has
provided thousands of dollars to local charities as well as thousands of
pounds of food. The Salvation Army and Women's Crisis Center have been
the primary benefactors. This popular event sparked the interest of
Stockton's Downtown Alliance to create the Downtown Festival of lights,
several years ago, in concert with MWYC's boat parade.
MWYC is an active participant in the local boating
community, the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association of Northern California
(An association of more than 100 boating organizations representing
thousands of boating families), and Recreational Boaters of California (a
statewide organization that represents boater's interest in Sacramento).
This includes the opportunity to participate in Opening Day on the Bay and
Opening Day on the Delta decorated boat parades which benefit their local
communities, visit many harbor communities and marinas throughout Northern
California, ans work in concert with others to promote and expand
recreational boating opportunities. For the past ten years MWYC has
participated in the PICYA Wheel Chair Regatta affording wheel chair bound
and other institutionalized veterans the opportunity to spend a few hours on
San Francisco Bay touring along the "City Front", Alcatraz Island, Treasure
Island, the Golden Gate, Mc Covey Cove, Oakland Estuary, and other points of
interest.
MWYC has been an active participant in the planning and
development of the proposed new Downtown Stockton Marina, and is planning
future events and activities to focus on the many attributes, facilities,
and events of the revitalized Downtown Stockton to attract the boating
community to Downtown Stockton as a "Destination".
